The Overcoming Insomnia DVD and complementing workbook includes a five week program which uses cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques for treating insomnia. CBT has been described as "the treatment method of choice for insomnia" by the National Institutes of Health. By modifying stressful, inaccurate thoughts about sleep while improving relaxation skills and lifestyle practices that effect sleep, the CBT approach is proven effective in overcoming insomnia. Lessons cover sleep scheduling, creating an optimal sleep environment, relaxation techniques, and daytime activities that will help improve sleep. Each week begins with a DVD session with renowned sleep expert Dr. Gregg Jacobs, using a program based on his 20 years of research and clinical work at Harvard's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. The remainder of the week is spent reinforcing skills learned during through the DVD session and recording sleep patterns in the workbook.
